Second Chances’ provider partners are the cornerstone of our work and the success of folks in our community who are facing challenges.

Fiona, a case worker for the Cambridge Police Department Clinical Support Unit, recently shared some thoughts on the impact of our partnership: 

“I just wanted to extend my gratitude for the clothing that was delivered today. This is pivotal in so many ways, especially to the reentry community that I work with who don’t have clean undergarments/shirts to wear transitioning back into the community."

For 20 years, Second Chances has supported the clients of more than 25 partner organizations by collecting, sorting, storing, and distributing clothing in the right sizes, types, and seasons to meet clients’ current needs. You – our generous community – make it possible to deliver free, empowering clothing to 1,000+ neighbors in need and distribute 4,000 pairs of socks and underwear each year.

While it feels like summer has just begun, back-to-school will be here more quickly than we think!

Second Chances is thrilled to be participating in several back-to-school events in our community so our area’s students can start the school year looking and feeling their best.

Five years of impact fueled by The Cummings Foundation

In 2021, Second Chances was honored to receive a generous grant of $100,000 over five years from the Cummings Foundation, enabling us to expand our impact, providing even more empowering, free clothing, shoes, and accessories to individuals experiencing poverty, homelessness, and crisis. This grant made it possible to reach more people with more clothing during the COVID-19 pandemic and recovery - a time when the folks we serve experienced higher than usual rates of instability, job loss, and displacement.

As we enter the final year of this transformative grant, here’s just a small snapshot of the impact this funding has had on our work: 

We’re reaching more people in need than ever before – nearly quadrupling the number of neighbors receiving empowering clothing. These outfits are more than just clothes - they are removing barriers to success, offering dignity, self-expression, and choice - one outfit at a time.

Because of the Cummings Foundation’s flexibility, we’ve been able to invest in Second Chances’ operations and infrastructure so we’re in a position to continue supporting more neighbors in need in the years ahead. Over the last four years, we completed several capacity building projects including:

• Renovating our clothing room so several people can gather clothing for clients at the same time;
• Purchasing and placing new clothing donation bins;
• Updating our website to a more user-friendly and accessible platform;
• Supporting our staff’s growth and skill-building;
• Designing and implementing a new outcomes tracking system;
• Adopting a new contact management system;
• Receiving more support with accounting, human resources, and marketing; and,
• Updating our personnel policies.

We could not do all this without the generosity of our funders, partners, and community combined with the dedicated and compassionate work of our team.
